ITG Rating: 3/5
Visit: November 2013

Having moved away from Ecclesall Road it is surprising how much it has changed, in what seems to be a short amount of time. There are a few places that stand out and I'm hoping to visit each of them at some point. Enter the Mud Crab....

On to the food topic of burgers - over the summer I'm quite proud to have developed some burger making skills. Toying with the idea of perhaps one day selling them, I'm quite keen to see what Sheffield has to offer in the burger business. Some of you following me on Twitter (@theitguydoes) will know I have shortlisted 3 places to start with Mud Crab, Relish and the Twisted Burger Company.
Having checked out the Sheffield Christmas Market, walked past the new Sheffield Market, it was up to Eccy Road to visit Mud Crab. I quite like the Mud Crab motor bike that it parked up at the entrance.

At around 5.45pm on a Saturday we arrived at Mud Crab without a reservation and was asked to pick our own seat. There were already a few diners (good sign) but it was still relatively early.

We got to sit at a nice clean round table with comfy seats, handed a menu and asked what drinks we would like. I still had my coat on and thought it was a bit early to be asked that question. I have no idea what you sell! I was slightly disappointed by the beer list both in choice but also the price. £3.90 for a bottle of Brooklyn or £3.90 Amstel Pint, £4.20 Moretti pint. Two or three drinks each and it quickly adds up!

It's worth noting that a daily cocktail happy hour runs 12 - 7, 9 - 11 (£4.50 on selected cocktails instead of £6.50)

Our waitress was friendly and quite attentive throughout the evening.

It took a while to study the menu and actually decide what we wanted. I chose the "2nd best cheeseburger" and some onion rings. (The best cheeseburger is made somewhere else!) My girlfriend ordered "No messing and charred chicken" 1/2 chicken with 2 sides. We were told there might be a 25 minute wait for the chicken, so we enjoyed our drinks and the atmosphere. I quite enjoyed the background music and wonder if it was a play list, compilation CD or something else....

Mud Crab Feast!

We chose to visit at the right time - as throughout our meal the place became full and it looked as though people were waiting in the bar area until they could be seated. A few parties had visited just for cocktails to start the night. I also spotted that there is quite a significant discount for students, which I think must be great for anyone with an in date student card, but not so for everyone else.

Before we knew it, our food had arrived. Within the first few seconds I was glad that we hadn't gone ahead with a starter before hand! I had a triple patty burger and a mountain of chips!
My tip would be to ask for a number of sauces. I only asked for a BBQ sauce - but I needed it to fight the chip mountain. The burger was pretty insane, I had to cut it in half then squeeze it down or learn how to unlock my jaw! It was a pretty good cheese burger, something of a challenge and I also enjoyed the chips. I had the side of onion rings as well, they were massive and added some variety to my meal, but I think I could have done without them. By this point we were too full to consider the dessert menu.

I think the atmosphere, style and the big burgers combine quite well. I think I'd enjoy Mud Crab more if I had a student card, but I know if I wanted to gather some friends to take on some big burgers, or treat someone to some cocktails in a lively part of the city - this would be a contender!

The bill came to around £45 for 2 main meals, 2 sides, 2 beers, 1 coke, 1 cocktail, 2 coffees.

Rating:

I have rated mud crab 3/5 for the following:

+ Well presented and nice atmosphere
+ Attentive service
+ Good food

- The cost (£9.95 for a big burger and just chips) and expensive beer (£4 a pint)
- 4 people eating at the Hungry Horse pub costs the same as 2 at Mud Crab!
- Return factor not as strong as with some other places
