Food:

I had been looking forward to visiting Sumo San ever since it opened. It's a short walk from the Sheffield train station and has its own customer parking. If you enjoy sushi, you are becoming spoilt for choice in Sheffield. The Sumo San sushi and teppanyaki restaurant is the latest.

When booking a table you can opt for sushi or teppanyaki. (Book in advance if you want to sit at the Teppanyaki table). If you are unfamiliar with teppanyaki, I would describe it as being sat around a grill where a chef will cook your food, but also entertain you with fancy moves, cooking skills and playing with fire! Maybe next time....

Food wise.....we had to turn the staff away quite a few times as it took a long time to decide before ordering. There is a lot of choice, our preference is to mix and match and share amongst yourselves. You can opt for set menus or your own selection. Options include sushi, sushi platters, noodle and broth dishes, curry dishes, rice dishes, Japanese sides (dumplings or gyoza are my fav!), katsu curry has become one of my favourite curry dishes, thanks to the Edo Sushi for introducing me to it at Japan day! We were both really pleased with the food.

The dancing spider (it is actually crab and v.tasty)

gyoza (dumplings) and tuna sushi (maki)

chicken katsu curry....yum

Drinks:

To get the party started I went for a Tokyo sunset cocktail, very fruity and was quite refreshing. There was also a selection of wines, but I also liked the beer selection offering a variety of Japanese and Eastern beers - a chance to try some new flavours.

Design:

I quite like the design of Sumo San, ranging from the menu, logos, bar area and decor. I think I will describe it as a smart casual restaurant. It is a nice venue to share food and maybe some drinks with friends, or provides a suitable location for a date (as I was on) - you can choose the showman ship and flames of the teppanyaki or an opportunity to sit away from that and just enjoy some fine Japanense food.

Atmosphere:

We were seated at 7.30pm on a Saturday and it was quiet when we sat down, by the time we left the place was full. It is a nice friendly atmosphere, with the occasional burst of flames from the teppanyaki grill. Maybe it was a good thing not to be sat next to it afterall!

Service:

The service was very polite and friendly from making the booking through to saying goodbye. We were promptly seated and the food was served in no time at all. Our tables were promptly cleaned and it was easy to get a staff members attention for more drinks, to pay the bill etc. As we left we were provided with a voucher for a return visit, useful to know and leads on to...

Value for Money:

I think Sumo San offers good value for money. I would happily visit to order a few sides or return for a feast! It is a nice venue, friendly staff, has a nice drink selection, creative and high quality food. The katsu curry (pictured above) cost £9.80 and was served with a miso soup. Combined with vouchers for return visits and I also spotted an advert for happy hour (good news for the cocktails). Home delivery is also available (within a 2 mile radius) via hungryhouse.co.uk
